South George Boulevard
Sebring, Florida
Highlands County

This site is located in the Central region of the state.

DIRECTIONS
Located in the Highlands County complex just west of US27 and three miles south of the intersection of US27 and SR 17.

Located adjacent to the Florida Medal of Honor Park in Sebring, the County Health Department building was dedicated to Highland County’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Maj. Thomas B. McGuire, Jr. A 1938 graduate of Sebring High School, Major McGuire received recognition and numerous decorations for his performance in the Pacific during World War II. Flying combat missions in his P-38 named “Pudgy”, McGuire is credited with downing thirty-eight enemy aircraft.

Memorials to Florida’s other Medal of Honor recipients can be found at this site as well.

Two markers in tribute to Maj. McGuire are located in Sebring, one at the site of his boyhood home in front of the present-day Sebring Elks Lodge and the second across the street from the nearby Kenilworth Lodge.
