The History Shops

History Shops at the Main Gallery, Old Capitol, and new Capitol provide ideal opportunities to purchase gifts for friends or mementos of your Florida vacation. Specializing in items related to Florida history and nature, the shops offer an outstanding selection of books, cards and posters, artwork and crafts, apparel, toys and games, and other souvenirs in all price ranges. They also feature merchandise relating to special exhibits and events. Many products, including those with the State Seal of Florida, are not sold elsewhere. Mail orders and major credit cards are accepted.

Traveling Exhibits

The Museum puts history on the road with its Traveling Exhibits Program (TREX). Eighteen exhibits with such diverse, Florida-related themes as citrus growing, archaeology, African Americans, Civil War, 19th-century water transportation, and Floridians interacting with their natural environment are available to educational, cultural, and business-oriented institutions. Fees vary between $150 to $2,000 depending on the exhibit. Borrowers are responsible for return shipping costs. A catalog describing rental details and exhibit themes is available from the TREX Coordinator.

Florida History Fair participants

Florida History Fair

Sponsored by the Museum of Florida History, the Florida History Fair (FHF) is an annual, statewide activity that enhances the teaching and learning of history at elementary and secondary levels. Florida is one of 50 states and the District of Columbia affiliated with the National History Day (NHD) program, which was established in 1974. NHD promotes history in the classroom by offering students the means and encouragement to do original research about people, ideas, and events of the past. The Museum of Florida History has coordinated FHF since the 1988-89 school year. Review the Florida History Fair web site information that includes tips for getting started, suggestions for topics and activities, and a timeline of important dates in the competition, or contact the History Fair Coordinator for more information.

Workshops

Museum staff are available to conduct teacher inservice and other workshops at meetings and conferences on themes relating to Florida history. While programs often are presented in Tallahassee in association with exhibits in the Main Gallery, educators and historians will travel to other locations in the state to give workshops of varying length. Among the topics offered are prehistoric Florida, Native American heritage, Spanish Florida, African American heritage, and maritime history. Programs tailored to audience age and needs combine lectures and hands-on activities, and handouts or classroom materials are provided. Contact the Statewide Service Program Representative for information.
