300' x 35 Miles: Corridor to the Past
 | Prior to the construction of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, a cooperative effort between the Florida Department of State and the Florida Department of Transportation led to some important archaeological discoveries just east of Tampa Bay. | Here, on property surveyed as the interstate right-of-way, Paleo as well as Archaic Indian dwelling sites were discovered and excavated. |
Artifacts recovered from these sites illustrate the evolution of early Indian stone technology from about 12,000 until about 4,000 years ago. These discoveries illuminate prehistoric Indian life at |

a time when profound changes in Florida's climate helped to cause the extinction of such animals as mammoths, mastodons, and sabertooth cats. |
Composed of three freestanding units, the exhibit uses original artifacts, reproductions, and graphics to tell the story of early Indian hunters from the Hillsborough region.
