George Buckner grew up in Gifford, Florida. After his father died, he left school in the sixth grade to help support his family. He and his brother Ellis worked in the orange groves until they discovered how much money could be made by painting. Buckner and his brother became part of Alfred Hair’s Fort Pierce group of artists. Buckner had natural artistic talent. A gifted musician, he played the saxophone, piano, and guitar. Painting was more than a way of making a living to him. Buckner took more time with his paintings than many of the other Highwaymen, paying careful attention to technique and composition.
