Frank Sams designed the Sams trolling spoon and patented it in 1908. This heavy duty spoon was meant for large game fish such as tarpon. Edward vom Hofe Company, a northern tackle producer, acquired the rights to the spoon in the 1930s. The company offered the spoon in several sizes until about 1940.
