- Cross Creek is based on the life of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of The Yearling and other Florida stories. Filmed at her home in Cross Creek and at other nearby communities, the movie is filled with the rich green of the Florida landscape. Cross Creek features Mary Steenburgen and Rip Torn in the leading roles. Rawlings’ real-life husband, Norton Baskin, appears in a cameo role as a man giving directions to Steenburgen.
